My experience is that enrichment and joy feed the soul and the mind in equal measure.
I am a parent of 2e children whose needs have not been met by most schooling models. Unfortunately where we live, most schools do not, cannot (or will not) accommodate gifted kids’ complex needs appropriately.
Some schools make an effort, but the asynchronous learning that is woven into the astoundingly complex giftedness profile makes it difficult to deliver.
There is no template with these learners and every moment of every day is bespoke.
Homeschooling and co-learning have served us well, and most recently we have struck gold in a private school that truly understands the difference between gifted and talented and facilitate the needs of 2e kids without batting an eyelid. (They have brought in a wonderful specialist in the field, who runs the giftie sessions).
While homeschooling is not the perfect solution for all gifted kids, the opportunity to learn in a way that suits their intellectual profile adds to the depth and enjoyment of education. Engagement is also deeper and a happier kid learns better too!
I believe we should strive for high-functioning kids rather than high-achieving – if your learners are happy and challenged they will achieve. My materials blend enrichment and cross-curricular enjoyment with varied challenge and have been fun for both learners and educators.
I am happy to answer questions about homeschooling, or I can point you in the direction of support specialists/groups/networks for gifted and twice-exceptional children.
Educating gifties is a challenging road to navigate, so I am only too happy to share what I have discovered on our journey.
I am not an expert, but I have been doing this for what feels like forever.
